Kinja'd!!!

Its been about two months since we had a stove. You might think we’ve been eating out a lot, but no. Mrs. Shop-Teacher has made do with a hot plate, a gas grill, and an instapot. We ate out one time that we wouldn’t have otherwise. Thanks to my buddy Fry-Guy for helping me muscle this thing into place.

We also got one of them fancy-pants dishwashers with the buttons on the top, that you can barely hear.

Also thanks to my local Ace Hardware, for having the weird adapters that both installs required, because nothing can be easy , and for having employees who know what’s needed and where it is. Support your local hardware stores!

Kinja'd!!!

Countertops should go in in the next week or two, thus bringing us down to the nitty gritty details. Quite frankly, there’s still a bunch of work to do, but at least it’s a functional kitchen again.

Looks like it is really coming along.

On a scale of 1 to "I'm going to throw this out the window", how bad did you find installing the over the range microwave?

Modern dishwashers are amazingly quiet. Such a pity all my apartments have used basically the lowest end appliances possible.

Its was about a 3. It helped that I've done one before, and that the range wasn't in yet. It's most definitely a two person job.

Yeah, it really is. I like that it shines a red light on the floor to let you know it’s actually running.

None of my apartments back in the day even had a dishwasher, but yeah, they always use the worst crap for everything in apartments.

Yep. I wasn't going to do all this work and use cheap cabinets, and we can't afford good cabinets, to I made them. Well, still need to make all the doors.

Looking good! And totally agree on local hardware stores! The people there know their stuff better than the big boxes.

I’ve done it too, and it’s not bad, as long as you have a 2nd set of hands to get it up there and attach it.

It frees up counter space, and it also functions as a vent hood.

Dude, you got skills!

Also OMFG WE HAVE THE SAME STOVE! AND FRIDGE! We love that stove!

Also, we have no microwave, because we’re not animals.  We get made fun of for that a lot...

I always went to my local Ace, but it shut down within the last few months. Kinda felt like I had lost a friend. They don’t sell Chuckles at Lowe’s! How am I going to buy the fasteners I need and get fat at the same time?!?

Thank you!

A couple people now have said they have and love that same stove, so I’m glad to hear that. Do you have problems with the ice maker on the fridge? It’s never broken down on us, but man the ice maker sucks!

Microwaves are awesome for heating things up quickly, but we never “cook” in it.

That’s our old faucet in there for a temp faucet. The plastic ins ert that holds the sprayer up keeps coming out, and it drives my wife crazy . We’ve decided to go super fancy on a replacement faucet, but haven’t picked the exact one yet.  (note to self: make wife pick a faucet already!)

The sink is a Hahn, that we bought from Costco of all places. It’s a really nice piece. The counter-top measurer was impressed by it.

Hmmm...  The ice maker seems fine.  Adequate for us, unless the outlaws come visit.  They like their toddies.  Of course, we have hard water here, so I have a whole house filter, a water softener, another filter, and then the fridge filter before the water gets to the ice maker....

For us, the ice often comes out crushed even if you selected cubes, and nobody has asked for crushed in days.  It’s also wildly inconsistent at the rate it dispenses.  Sometimes it takes forever to pop a few cubes out, even if there’s plenty in the hopper.  Sometimes it comes out like a freakin’ avalanche!

Dishwashers: I don’t understand the draw. I find it easier to just wash the dishes than to load and unload the dishwasher. And the good ones probably cost as much as a used car.

I can either spend 30 minutes washing every single dish and piece of silverware by hand, or I can spend 5 minutes loading the dishwasher, push a button, and then spend 5 minutes unloading the dishwasher. That’s 20 minutes a day saved, or 140 minutes a week.

Lets round down to 2 hours of time saved per week, so every year I’m gaining 104 hours of free time. Again, I shall round down, and say it saves me 100 hours a year. Over the course of a decade (and I expect it will last longer, but let’s just say it doesn’t), the dishwasher will save me a thousand hours of time.

Now, I spent $750 on a fancy dishwasher, so I’m spending well under a dollar for every hour of free time I gain. I think my time is well worth that. You could easily spend $300 on a dishwasher that will get the dishes just as clean, it just won’t look as nice or be as quiet. That’s about 33¢ per hour of free time gained.

If you don’t think your time is worth that much money, well that’s a whole ‘nother issue.

I washed a few dishes this morning. Took me about 8 minutes. I’d have had to let those dishes sit in the dishwasher until there was a full load, then run the dishwasher and wait for it to finish, so I could have my container clean to pack my lunch. Dishwasher takes, what, better part of an hour to run? Uses a bunch of electricity, too. Or I could own enough dishes to let a chunk of them live in the dishwasher until a full load is ready to be washed. And then wait for that. Or, I could spend 8 minutes washing a few dishes. And there will always be the lasagna dish or the pie dish or the ravioli pot that has to be manually washed anyhow.

I think you are looking at this the wrong way. Over the weekend, I described myself thus, to my wife : “I am an impetuous man of action when I am not being a passive-aggressive procrastinator.” I think if that (idiotic) modern appliance allows you to be lazy, then that’s priceless. Forget all the bookkeeping and arithmetic.

We’ve got plenty of dishes, I don’t need THAT exact dish. Modern dishwashers use less energy and water than hand washing to boot.

I don’t spend much time doing nothing. I hate drudgery , and washing dishes by hand is drudgery.  By not spending that time on stupid dishes, I can go build/fix/tinker with something instead.
